Recommended Use / Claim: Traditional Herbal Medicine: Comfrey Fix-It™ is used in traditional Western herbalism as a soothing topical balm to help temporarily relieve;

• minor muscle and joint aches,
• bruises,
• sprains,
• strains, and
• inflammation

associated with soft-tissue overexertion.

Note: This claim is based on traditional Western herbal use (≥50 years of documented historical use in Canada and Europe) and has not been evaluated by Health Canada for clinical drug efficacy.

Medicinal Ingredients (per application/portion)

• Symphytum officinale (Comfrey Leaf (Oil Infusion; no root or aqueous extracts) 67%
• Gaultheria procumbens (Wintergreen Essential Oi) 23%
• Cymbopogon citratus (Lemongrass Essential Oil) 10%

Non-Medicinal Ingredients

• Cocos nucifera (Coconut) Oil
• Cera alba (Beeswax)
• Maranta arundinacea (Arrowroot) Root Powder
• Tocopherol (Non-GMO Vitamin E) 

No synthetic fragrances, dyes, parabens, phenoxyethol, or petroleum derivatives.

Patch Test: Perform a patch test on the inner forearm 24 hours prior to initial application. Discontinue use immediately if irritation, redness, or itching occurs.

Application Amount: To start, scoop a small, pea-sized amount of balm and warm it between clean fingertips until it transforms into a smooth, glide-able oil-balm texture.  Apply more if required.

Method & Frequency: Gently press and massage a thin layer into clean, dry, intact skin over the affected muscle or joint area. Use up to 3 times daily.

Target Areas: Formulated for the entire body (e.g., sore shoulders, knees, wrists, elbows, feet, back).

Target Precautions: For external use only. Avoid contact with the immediate eye area, broken skin, and mucous membranes. Wash hands thoroughly with soap after application.

Application Window: Apply only as needed. In alignment with Health Canada safety standards for topical comfrey preparations, do not use continuously for more than 10 consecutive days, and do not exceed 4 to 6 weeks of total cumulative use per calendar year.

Alkaloid Context: Comfrey naturally contains trace pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs). This formulation uses a lipid (pure oil) infusion of aerial leaves; no root tissue and no aqueous extraction methods are employed, significantly limiting potential alkaloid transfer. However, adhering to recommended duration limits ensures safe, responsible botanical use.

Contraindications

Do not use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Do not use on broken, abraded, chafed, blistered, or infected skin, open wounds, deep cuts, or burns.

Do not use if you have pre-existing liver disease, hepatic impairment, or are taking hepatotoxic medications (see Drug Interactions).

Do not use if you have a known allergy or sensitivity to salicylates, aspirin (ASA), wintergreen, lemon grass, or any ingredient in this product.

Not for use in children under 12 years of age unless expressly directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings & Precautions

External Use Only: Strictly for topical application on intact skin.

 Do not ingest.

Occlusion Warning: Do not apply under tight bandages, heat wraps, or occlusive dressings, as this may increase systemic absorption of methyl salicylate.

Surface Area Limit: Do not apply extensively over large body surface areas (greater than 10% of total body surface area) to avoid systemic salicylate accumulation.

Consult a Healthcare Practitioner: If symptoms worsen, do not improve, or persist beyond 7 days of use.

Known Adverse Reactions

Rare: Localized skin irritation, redness, contact dermatitis, or mild allergic reaction (most commonly associated with concentrated essential oils). Published clinical reviews note no systemic adverse events associated with leaf-only topical preparations when applied to healthy, unbroken skin (Kuchta & Schmidt, 2020). Discontinue immediately if any skin rash or discomfort occurs.

 

Anticoagulants / Blood Thinners: Contains natural methyl salicylate (from wintergreen oil); consult your doctor before use if you are taking blood-thinning medications (e.g., Warfarin, direct oral anticoagulants, high-dose aspirin).

Hepatotoxic Medications: Because comfrey contains trace pyrrolizidine alkaloids, avoid concurrent prolonged use with pharmaceutical agents metabolized by hepatic enzymes (CYP3A4, CYP2E1) or drugs with known hepatotoxic profiles (e.g., high-dose acetaminophen, statins, anticonvulsants, systemic anti-fungals).

Pyrrolizidine Alkaloid (PA) Risk Management: Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) contains trace 1,2-unsaturated pyrrolizidine alkaloids (e.g., lycopsamine). Published dermal absorption literature indicates poor transdermal penetration through healthy, intact human stratum corneum (Kuchta & Schmidt, 2020). Root material contains up to 100 times higher alkaloid concentrations and is strictly excluded from this formulation.

While modern clinical trials exist for standardized comfrey preparations in acute sprains and joint pain (Predel et al., 2005), those studies generally evaluated proprietary root/leaf combinations. Storage Temperature: Store in a cool, dry place at room temperature (15–25°C / 59–77°F). May be refrigerated to prolong botanical freshness and maintain a firmer consistency.

Shelf Life: Discard 18 months after opening (refer to the batch number and expiration date printed on the bottom of the container).
