No systemic adverse events reported with topical comfrey leaf preparations on intact skin in published literature (Kuchta & Schmidt, 2020).

Pyrrolizidine Alkaloid (PA) Risk: Comfrey leaf contains trace PAs (e.g., lycopsamine). Studies indicate poor dermal absorption through intact human skin (Kuchta & Schmidt, 2020). Root contains significantly higher PA levels and is not used.
-
Traditional Use Basis: Documented in European and North American folk medicine for centuries. Clinical studies exist for comfrey ointments (e.g., Predel et al., 2005), but most used root or root/leaf blends, not identical to this leaf-only formulation.
-
May potentiate hepatotoxicity when used with medications metabolized by CYP3A4 or CYP2E1 (e.g., acetaminophen, statins, anticonvulsants).
- Comfrey leaf: Wildcrafted or cultivated in Canada/US using low-impact, sustainable harvest protocols.
- Older leaves preferred (lower PA, higher allantoin, per Bona Res guidance).
- No animal testing. Cruelty-free.
